Frequently Asked Questions
Is my receipt image sent to any server for OCR processing?
No. Text recognition is performed using Tesseract.js, a WebAssembly port of the Tesseract OCR engine that runs natively in your browser. Your receipt images are never uploaded to our servers, keeping sensitive financial data entirely private.
What receipt types and text formats can the OCR scanner read?
The scanner can read printed receipts, invoices, and documents in Latin-script languages including English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. It handles varied fonts, standard receipt widths, and common store layouts. Handwritten text has limited accuracy in automated OCR.
Can I use this tool for expense tracking?
Yes. After scanning, the extracted text can be copied and pasted into a spreadsheet or expense management tool. Logged-in features coming soon include automatic line-item categorisation and one-click CSV export for expense reporting workflows.
OCR Processing
Receipt images are processed using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on the server side. The image is pre-processed (deskew, contrast enhancement, binarization) before text extraction. Structured fields — merchant name, date, line items, subtotal, tax, and total — are then identified using a trained extraction model.
Category Detection
Expense categories (Food, Transport, Shopping, Healthcare, Entertainment, etc.) are automatically assigned based on the merchant name and item descriptions. This uses a combination of keyword matching and a classification model trained on common receipt patterns across major retail, restaurant, and service categories.
Accuracy Factors
OCR accuracy is highest on: printed receipts (vs handwritten), high-contrast backgrounds, straight/flat images (not crumpled), and good lighting with no glare. Thermal paper fading significantly reduces accuracy. For best results, photograph receipts immediately after receiving them under natural or bright artificial light.
Data Privacy
Receipt images are uploaded to our servers for OCR processing. They are processed immediately and not stored beyond the session. No receipt data is used for training or analytics. Payment card numbers, if visible on receipts, are automatically masked in the output. For highly sensitive receipts, consider blacking out card or account numbers before uploading.
